Scottish Government donates £250, 000 to CADECOM towards food crisis support

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi-ECM says it appreciates the humanitarian support it receives from the Scottish Government through Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF).

Bishop Chairman for the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM) also known as Caritas, Rt. Rev. Alfred Mateyu Chaima, made the remarks today, 28/02/2024 at a press conference held in Zomba where he delivering a statement of gratitude to the Government of Scotland following the generous grant of 250,000 British Pounds towards the Food Crisis Support to the Malawian people.

Bishop Chaima said that the grant has come at a right time when many people in Malawi are in dire need of food assistance.

Bishop Chaima, who spoke on behalf of his fellow Catholic Bishops, said that he thought of making a statement as a gesture of appreciation by the Church and many people in need that will benefit from the support.

Speaking at the function, Programmes Officer for SCIAF, Chris Mallullich, said the organisation is aware of the challenges that the country is currently facing and that SCIAF will do what it can to continue to support the people of Malawi.

Also speaking at the same function, the National CADECOM Coordinator, Chimwemwe Sakunda Ndlovu, disclosed that they are looking into long term interventions to disaster-induced challenges such as building resilient communities so that present beneficiaries of this project can stand on their own in the future.

According to Ndlovu, this project will support the worst hit households by the current food crisis during the months of February and March 2024. She added that the project will reach out to 4,520 families with cash transfers of MK100, 000 to each household in 9 districts of Chikwawa, Nsanje, Phalombe, Zomba, Machinga, Dedza, Nkhotakota, Dowa and Mzimba.
